Venezuelan Protesters Converge on Caracas Airport Following Disputed Election

Hundreds of protesters attempted to take over Simón Bolívar International Airport serving Caracas on Monday afternoon, amid escalating protests in Venezuela against the government of dictator Nicolás Maduro the day after he declared himself the winner of the presidential elections under allegations of fraud.

In videos circulating on social media, protesters can be seen gathered in front of the passenger terminal entrance waving Venezuelan flags.

For now, regular flights continue to operate with some normality in Caracas. Intercontinental services like those of Iberia, Laser, and Plus Ultra to Madrid, or TAP to Lisbon departed within their scheduled times, as well as operations to neighboring countries like Bogotá or Panama City.

Avianca and Copa Airlines sources told Aviacionline that flights remain unaffected. LATAM Airlines is offering flexibility for passengers with flights scheduled for Monday and Tuesday to Caracas, allowing them to reschedule without penalties up to seven days after the original travel date, subject to seat availability in the same cabin.
