#TBT: South African Airways flights to Argentina and Brazil in 1999
In 1998, after a 13-year suspension, South African Airways resumed operations to Argentina and Brazil from Johannesburg. The airline operated with the Boeing 747SP and Boeing 747-200, between once and twice a week.

As a result of the crisis and a reduction in demand, South African suspended flights to Argentina later in 2003, leaving the option between Brazil and Argentina in codeshare with Varig. Operations to Sao Paulo continued.

In 2009, more than five years later, South African Airways confirmed the return of the non-stop flight between Johannesburg and Buenos Aires. In this case, the aircraft chosen were the Airbus A340-200 and Airbus A340-300, and the Airbus A340-600 in some cases.
The route started with two weekly services, increasing to three by the end of 2009.

On March 28th, 2014, the carrier permanently cancelled its operations to Argentina. Subsequent to the suspension, South African made several visits to Buenos Aires, but all of them for special reasons.

South African Airways will resume operations to South America starting October 30th. The airline will have services to Sao Paulo from Johannesburg and Cape Town with Airbus A330 aircraft.
Each route will have two weekly flights.
