United begins selling tickets for Washington DC – Cape Town route

United has put its flights between Washington DC and Cape Town up for sale, making it the only airline to offer a nonstop route between the U.S. capital and South Africa’s second largest city.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) recently granted the airline to operate three weekly flights: starting November 17 the service will be available year-round, and tickets are already available for sale through the company’s website and its regular channels. This route is still pending approval from the South African authorities.

«We are delighted to expand our offerings in Africa with this first direct link between Washington DC and Cape Town,» said Patrick Quayle, United’s Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances.

«These new flights are in addition to our existing year-round New York/Newark to Cape Town service: together they will provide a near-daily pattern from the U.S. to Cape Town, along with connectivity to the wider region through our Airlink partnership,» Quayle added.

Flight Itinerary

  • Washington DC – Cape Town Flight UA 2222 IAD 18:40 – CPT 16:10+1 Monday, Thursday and Saturday.
  • Cape Town – Washington DC Flight UA 2223 CPT 20:50 – IAD 05:50+1 Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

This new route will be United’s third non-stop service to South Africa, currently offering daily flights between Newark (EWR) and Johannesburg (JNB) and recently began year-round service to Cape Town (CPT) with three weekly flights from Newark (EWR).

Dulles International Airport (IAD) will be the third African connection offered by the company, in addition to services to Accra (ACC) and Lagos (LOS), both with a schedule of three flights per week operated by Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with a capacity of 243 seats.

United for the winter season will offer 9,598 seats per week on 38 air operations between the U.S. and Africa and will be the largest U.S. operator in South Africa.
